How to Pray for Forgiveness in Five Steps

• Treat the promise as more reliable than the feeling. Romans 8:1 states, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” That is a legal status, not a mood.
• Notice the difference between conviction and shame. Conviction is specific and points to a fix. Shame is vague, permanent, and tells you what you are rather than what you did. Only one of the two is from God.
• Stop re-confessing. Hebrews 8:12 records God saying He will remember their sins no more. If He has stopped bringing it up, you can stop too.

How to Apologize to the Person You Hurt

1. Say what you did, not that something happened. “I spoke to you with contempt” rather than “things got heated.”

A note on Matthew 6:14-15, since it worries people. Christians have read this in different ways for centuries. Duas for Forgiveness in Islam

Many readers of this site are Muslim, so here are the best known supplications for seeking Allah’s forgiveness, with transliteration, meaning, and source. Seeking forgiveness is called istighfar, and turning away from the sin itself is called tawbah.

1. Astaghfirullah means “I seek forgiveness from Allah.” It is the shortest and most frequently used. The Prophet, peace be upon him, is reported to have said that he sought Allah’s forgiveness more than seventy times a day (Sahih Bukhari 6307).
2. Astaghfirullaha Rabbi wa atubu ilayh means “I seek the forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, and I turn to Him in repentance.” This adds the turning to the asking, which is the heart of tawbah.
3. Sayyidul Istighfar, the master of seeking forgiveness, begins “Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana abduka”, meaning “O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant.” The narration in Sahih Bukhari 6306 says that whoever recites it during the day with conviction and dies that day will enter Paradise.
4. Allahumma innaka Afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni means “O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.” Aisha asked what to say on Laylat al-Qadr and was taught this (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3513).
5. Rabbana zalamna anfusana is the prayer of Adam in Quran 7:23: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”
6. Quran 2:286 closes with “Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us,” which is why it is so often recited at the end of a prayer.
7. Quran 39:53 is the verse most often quoted to someone who feels beyond hope: “Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”

Scholars generally describe sincere tawbah as having three conditions: stopping the sin, feeling genuine regret for it, and resolving not to return to it.
